To keep your marriage steady
and arguments at bay,
always say “I’m listening,”
even when you’re not —
but in a convincing way.
Marriage is choosing someone
to annoy forever
and calling it
a shared future.
It’s arguing over nothing,
then laughing about it,
then arguing again
because one of you
brought up the past
“in the wrong tone.”
Marriage isn’t magic.
It’s teamwork,
patience,
compromise —
and pretending
you didn’t hear
the ridiculous thing
they just said.
And yet —
somehow —
you wouldn’t trade it.
Not even on the days
when they chew
like a wood chipper,
or breathe too loudly.
Because every day —
even the strange ones,
even the loud-chewing ones —
you keep choosing each other.
That’s the real miracle.
(That, and not smothering them
when they snore.)
